But, do you have any idea about where does it came from? Let me tell you; it has quite a surprising story behind using the photograph of our “Father of Nation” and a “great personality” Mahatma Gandhi.

Well, the Indian currency notes issued earlier since 1987 actually had the Ashoka pillar watermark and Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait. But in reality the Mahatma Gandhi series of banknotes was issued by Reserve bank of India in the year 1996 and thus since then it has Gandhi’s watermark as well as the Portrait itself.

But then again the question; how did Gandhi’s smiling photograph was chosen to be on our India’s currency notes.

Well, if you thought that it must be just a normal drawing (caricature) then NO it’s definitely not.

The actual smiling picture was taken when Mahatma Gandhi was once standing next to the Lord Fredrick Pethick Lawrence.

Yes, you certainly read it right.

Also check out the photograph below.

This picture clearly stands to show at that moment Mahatma Gandhi was actually looking at somebody by delivering a smile. Well, one must admit it came real good though (Wink!) and therefore this exact image became the face on India’s currency notes.

If you see; Gandhi’s smiling photograph is been cropped and taken smartly.

Plus; this perfect smiling shot was captured in the year 1946 by an unknown photographer. If you’re wondering where it is taken? Then let me clear your doubts- it was taken at the former viceroy house which is now known as the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Gandhiji’s Face On India’s Currency Notes – Isn’t the story surprising? Well if you liked the story then do spread the word and let others also known about it too.

Any thoughts about it? Leave a comment below.

He led the whole nation towards a successful fight for freedom against the British who had captured our land for 100 years.

While the whole nation was going violent for freedom, Gandhi taught them a different way. He believed that instead of guns and bullets, things can be achieved by words and good deeds.

Mahatma Gandhi played a huge role in transforming the mindset of Indians at that time, otherwise, we might not have been able to call ourselves an Independent country.

He cared for people

He was not just a leader who cared for himself or the freedom of his country, he cared for the citizens of that country. Gandhi ji made people realize that they are losing their families and their own lives in these fights with the English. He made them understand that they can achieve a lot if they protest silently without any violence and people believed him because they could see how much he cared about them.

He was patient and made others too

Unlike many other freedom fighters, Gandhi ji believed that good results take time to come out. Hence, every time he started a revolution, he didn’t fight for immediate results but let the time play its role and see a larger impact. People understood his view of patience because of the results that Mahatma Gandhi got and became equally patient.

He appealed people emotionally

He was known as the Saint Leader or Saint Politician, which is why his name was famous as Mahatma Gandhi. This happened because he used to connect with people on an emotional and spiritual level. He never talked about war or violence but love and unity. Gandhi ji made the whole country understand that the unity amongst the citizens and love towards each other is the only thing that can help them succeed. The way he connected with them emotionally, filled Indians with empathy towards each other.

It is sad that our great leader Mahatma Gandhi taught us so many things and yet we live in a world where all these qualities are scarce.

On his birthday today, I really hope he was alive to teach this generation just what he taught Indians before independence.

However, no matter what most of today’s generation feels or says about him, the man makes more and more sense in today’s world!

No, not from a political angle or just because he is the Father of the Nation we should follow him and his ideologies. The fact is that his thought process can be safely applied in our day to day lives and we can surely reap rich dividends!

Want to know how?

Let’s share with you some of his major philosophies and how they can help you live a better life!

1) Non-violence

He not only propagates physical non-violence, but also non-violence of the speech and thought! Imagine if we all follow it in our lives while dealing with an irritating boss or stupid traffic jams or our maids, life will become so peaceful. Of course, the major ramifications will be seen in societies leading to better lives for everyone.

2) Make in India

Mr. Narendra Modi might be trying to popularize his own mantra of Make In India, but Mahatma did that all those years ago by talking about making and using our own products. This way, he spoke about self-reliance so that no one can rule us and we don’t become dependent on others while making sure there is prosperity for every citizen of the country!

3) Truth

No matter how much we say that lies are important in today’s world, one should learn to be diplomatic etc etc. we all realize in the bottom of our hearts that how satisfying truth is. Yes, sometimes it hurts, sometimes it spoils relations, but in the long run it is nothing but truth that makes us have a peaceful sleep. Peace is what today’s stressed generation is searching for and it can come only with being truthful, to one self and others!

4) Change

We all talk about how life is changing, things are not the same, they are not good etc., but it is important for us to become the change we want to see in the society. And any change begins with us! This is what Bapu said and it holds true even to this day. Try to change your thoughts, our reactions to things happening around us and see how life changes for the better!

5) Patience

This is by far one of the most important lessons he taught us, in fact reminded us of. No matter how fast our lives are, patience is still a virtue and can go a long way in helping us achieve our dreams and maintain peace and social order in society. Impatience only complicates things and our lives are complicated anyways.

Try to apply his lessons in life and see the positive change. But yes, don’t expect results in minutes or hours! Have patience, good things take time!

The term, made so popular by the Munnabhai, has been welcomed and adopted with open arms. Be it anti-corruption movement with Anna Hazare or protest on India Gate for the brave heart of India, people resorted to Gandhigiri.

The modern take on Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence is gradually entering into popular imagination and academic discourses too. His writing, running into more than one hundred volumes contains wide range of views on different issues. In the nearly six decades since his death a large and diverse range of writings – comparative, expository, biographical, hagiographical and dialogical – has appeared on Gandhi.

Delhi University’s Ramjas College offers a short term ‘add on’ course on Gandhigiri.

The course focuses attention on issues of continuing relevance – tradition, modernity, nation, women, caste, race and environment – thereby giving the course a contemporary flavour. The leitmotif of the course promises and promotes a fruitful dialogue with a creative and original thinker whose ideas and practices deserve far more than either adoration or dismissal.

Every generation re-examines the past, trying to understand it anew. It may be a difference in perspective, or the knowledge of new facts, which alter the picture – sometimes superficially, sometimes totally. India today is clearly reassessing the legacy of Gandhi, and his continuing relevance.

This course closely examines different interpretations of Gandhi’s view and ideas on myriad issues, and in doing so, it moves beyond existing scholarship.

It provides an essential new reference for students and scholars of politics, history, philosophy as well as general readers, activist and admirers of Gandhi.

The topics included in this course are:
1. Philosophical and Intellectual Sources of Gandhi’s ideas
2. Satyagraha
3. Gandhi, Admbedkar and Untouchability
4. Gandhi and Women Empowerment
5. Communal Harmony
6. Gandhigiri and Conflict Resolution
7. Gandhi’s Contemporary Relevance
8. Gandhi and Postmodernism
9. Film shows on Gandhi
