Sports in India is witnessing a radical change with forward-looking reforms being implemented to usher in a culture of sports within the country. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in conjunction with the HRD Ministry are playing their part to ensure that India meets its ambitious vision of creating some of the world’s finest sportspersons. These bodies are aggressively promoting the inculcation of sports at a grass root level. Indeed, schools and colleges remain key to the nurturing and grooming of tomorrow’s sports talent pool across the nation.

The coaches of today play a critical role in moulding the nascent talent of budding sportspeople. More than just the stereotypical role portrayed by some or enabling the racking up of points on a scoreboard though, the right coach can help unlock the talent of a budding sportsperson in much the same way as access to the right infrastructure can. The finest of sportspeople down the ages have scaled the summit of their respective sports backed by the guiding hand of some of the game’s finest coaches. Sportspeople and their coaches share a symbiotic relationship, with prime examples of this seen across the sporting spectrum. Sachin Tendulkar and Ramakant Achrekar; Pete Sampras and Robert Lansdorp; Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson; P.V. Sindhu with Pullela Gopichand; the list of sporting synergies is a long and illustrious one. Indeed, the best of coaches see the unpolished diamond glinting within an aspiring sportsperson, and it is only after a coach helps a sportsperson tap into their latent potential that they stand glittering on the world stage.

With the intention of building a bright future for the Indian sports and fitness fraternity, The Times of India Global Sports Business Show 2016, scheduled to be held from the 21st to 23rd of December at the Bombay Exhibition Center, Mumbai, has designed a “Train-the-Trainer” programme. The Train–the-Trainer program is targeted to all fitness trainers; school & college physical education teachers; school/college students, sports aspirants, sports Instructors; coaches/ trainers of gymkhanas, federations & associations, gyms, yoga and zumba classes. This initiative will give a fillip to the sports community working passionately towards the collective dream of realizing India’s sporting dreams.

The Train-the-Trainer model enables experienced personnel to guide aspiring coaches and instructor on the optimal ways in which to deliver courses, workshops and seminars. Through training sessions led by the course designer or subject-matter expert, these sessions can be an invaluable tool in building a pool of competent coaches who can then pass on their learnings to a collection of learners. These sessions typically prepare instructors to present information effectively, respond to participant questions and lead activities that reinforce learning and teach instructors on techniques to lead discussions, listen effectively, make accurate observations and help their wards to realize their full potential.

The Train-the-Trainer workshop will be conducted over 3 days in a dedicated zone, with intensive sessions designed to turn participants into top-notch facilitators. The Bhaichung Bhutia Football School and NBA India will be conducting a workshop on 21st December, the Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation is scheduled to conduct a workshop on 22nd December with Kaizzad Capadia slated to conduct a mentorship session on 23rd December. These workshop intends to guide the participants through exercises, skills development methodologies and deploying modern fitness and training equipment that will help perfect their own coaching techniques.

The Train the Trainer sessions will include intensive workshops for coaches and aspiring sportspeople, which will be conducted by the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools, Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation, NBA certified coaches and Question and Answer sessions on Health and Fitness by Kaizzad Capadia. These focused workshops will offer attendees crucial inputs on the latest trends and global best practices from renowned sporting bodies, and help instil a culture of sports excellence amongst the sportspeople of tomorrow.

The workshops would cover best practices from leading sports academies, help bring in In-depth understanding on coaching methodologies and drive fitness programs via offering guidance on diet and nutrition. It will also offer insights on mental and physical development of athletes, help efficiently identify potential, motivate and nurture talent, spread awareness about the latest fitness & gym equipment and training regimens and help understand the tactical and social aspects of a good game play.

Commenting on the event, Deepak Lamba (President, Times Strategic Solutions Limited) said, “Across India, there has been growing recognition that we can create a richer sports talent pool by making changes at the grass roots level. The Times of India Global Sports Business Show 2016 is an effort in this direction, offering a rich source of ideas and expertise for trainers to draw from as they seek to create the sporting generation of tomorrow. We need to encourage budding athletes in their formative years, but instead parents consider academic progress a priority which rarely allows children to dream of professional sports careers. In an attempt to propel the sports industry and to create an additional positive impact on the business of sports, The Times of India aligns with government initiatives like Make in India and Skill India by announcing ‘ Global Sports Business Show’ on 21, 22, 23 December 2016.

Currently, the Make in India initiative is centred on showcasing the manufacturing prowess of the Indian industry across various domains and sectors. It is a major national initiative designed to facilitate investment, foster innovation, enhance skill development, protect intellectual property and build best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure.

It is expected that this advanced expertise and accountability will now translate into the Sports Industry as well. The sports goods industry in India has witnessed a phenomenal growth over the past five decades and now occupies a place of prominence in the Indian economy. In view of its humongous potential for employment, growth and export, there has been an increased emphasis on its planned development, aimed at optimal utilisation of resources for maximising the returns, particularly from exports.

The Indian sports goods industry exports majorly to countries like the UK, Germany, France, among others where major items that are exported are inflatable balls, hockey sticks and balls, cricket bats and balls, boxing equipment, fishing equipment, indoor games like carom and chess boards and different kinds of protective equipment. The Indian sports goods industry is a highly labour intensive industry, which provides employment to the weaker sections of society and also employs a large number of women.

In light to this, The Times of India Global Sports Business Show will feature a three day sports exhibition and strategic conferences with the participation of sports enthusiasts, vendors, dealers, delegates, and B2B dealers. Expectations about results on the business of sports remain high at Times ofIndia Global Sports Business Show which promises engagements between stakeholders, buyers and decision makers aiming to enhance the domain, resulting in innovation and advancement of sports in the country.

The event aims to bring together exhibitors from around the globe to invest and display their products ranging from sporting goods, apparel, broadcasting rights, sponsorship and gate revenues along with giving the attendees a first-hand experience of the goods and services on display. Seminars and allied events on other fitness-related aspects including nutrition, sports medicine will also be hosted.

The 2016 Rio Olympics brought to the forefront the immediate need to address sports-related issues and make it a viable sector. The country witnessed some glorious moments with badminton star P.V. Sindhu and wrestler Sakshi Malik bringing home the silver and bronze respectfully. India, as a nation with a huge youth population is capable of overcoming problems like scarce resources, mis-allocation of funds, corruption, and bureaucratic red tapism.

In keeping with the dramatic shift that the sports industry has undergone in the past 20 years, the Global Sports Business Show is expected to restore the unifying appeal that the sports industry boasts of the world over by ensuring a sustainable, secure and prosperous future for the succeeding generations in our country.
