Indian wrestling took centrestage at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where Indian wrestlers’ Sushil Kumar, Amit Kumar, Rajeev Tomar and Vinesh Phogat bagged gold and silver respectively. In the time when the Indian contingent were suffering especially in badminton, squash and hockey; the wrestling feat comes as a sigh of great relief.

Sushil Kumar, who is a star in India, and also holds the Olympic bronze and silver medals, took just 107 seconds to his opponent, Pakistan’s Qamar Abbas in the quest to win the gold medal. The bout was scheduled in men’s freestyle 74kg category wrestling. After the match, Sushil spoke to press about the result where he was quoted, “It was an easy final bout for me and I feel happy to have added another gold in the Commonwealth Game.”

More good news followed as wrestler Amit Kumar won another gold medal in men’s 57kg category as he defeated Nigeria’s Ebikweminomo Welson 3-1 on classification points. With news flooding of India in top spot to clinch a quadruple of gold medals, it wasn’t to be as wrestler Rajeev Tomar had to settle in for a silver after losing to Canadian Korey Jarvis in the final of the men’s 125kg freestyle.

In the women’s category, 19-year old Vinesh Phogat rounded out a triple whammy of gold medals in wrestling as the former revelled in the women’s freestyle 48kg wrestling competition with a rousing win over England’s Yana Rattigan. Not to forget, Vinesh is the cousin of Indian female wrestler Geeta Phogat who had won gold at the 2010 CWG.

India may have been left disappointed in squash and badminton but the feats achieved in shooting and wrestling might just have lifted some spirits as well brought up some smiles.

Not to forget, India still can lift some more gold in other upcoming events as well.
