Mamata government selling onions at Rs.36 per kg

the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal has set up 40 stores that will be selling the vegetable bulbs at Rs.36 per kg, authorities said on Friday.

With a view to reining in the price of onions, which has gone up to Rs.100 a kilo in the national capital, the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal has set up 40 stores that will be selling the vegetable bulbs at Rs.36 per kg, authorities said on Friday.

“The budget of the common man has gone haywire and so we have set up these stores,” Agriculture Marketing Minister Arup Roy said.

Roy said the move was aimed at regulating prices as well as providing relief to the consumers.

The minister, however, hoped that the price of onions would come down by November when fresh produce hits the market.

The Banerjee regime has been setting up fair-price shops selling various produce, including fish, chicken, and vegetables, whenever their prices have shot up. A special task force has also been constituted to monitor prices.
