The Germans kick-off their World Cup campaign tonight against the Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal in Salvador in an important Group G encounter. Germany have recorded wins over Portugal at the 2006 World Cup, plus in the last two European championships and would want to continue their dominating run over the Portuguese. But with CR7 in hot form in front of goal, Germany won’t find this match easy in any way. Here’s the strengths and weaknesses of both the teams prior to their kick-off in Brazil’s Salvador tonight:

Germany:
Strengths – One of the strongest sides in the tournament so far, Germany possess players that are superstars in their own right. From Manuel Neuer in the goal to Thomas Mueller in attack, Germany has an array of talent that can make any opposition look ordinary. The defence is guarded by veteran Phillip Lahm whereas Mesut Ozil might be the creative force of the team.

Weakness – Some of the players are underperforming with the likes of Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos in particular. Coach Joachim Loew has a selection ahead of the Portugal clash and might even drop the former Real Madrid star.

Portugal:
Strengths – Driven by the force of Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal can never be underestimated. The Real Madrid forward will be supported by the likes of Nani and Joao Moutinho in attack.

Weakness – Portugal needs to stop depending more on Ronaldo and utilize more on team chemistry.

With the records stacked against Portugal, an inspired performance from Cristiano Ronaldo might just lift them! Or not.
