5 Reasons Why Wayne Rooney’s Appointment As Skipper Is A Bad Move By Louis Van Gaal

The likes of Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand have set themselves in new pastures as new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal sets his methods into the Old Trafford club.

The likes of Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand have set themselves in new pastures as new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal sets his methods into the Old Trafford club.

Before even a ball has been kicked in the Premier League, BIG news came in that the former Dutch coach has handed over the skipper’s armband to England striker Wayne Rooney while Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher will be the vice-captain.

“It is a huge honour for me and for my family to be named captain of this great club,” Rooney told upon receiving the honour. “It is a role I will perform with great pride. Team spirit has always been very high in our dressing room and I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me,” he added.

Van Gaal was also quoted about Rooney’s appointment where stated, “For me it’s always very important the choice of captain. Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does. I have been very impressed by his professionalism and his attitude to training and to my philosophy. He is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team and I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role,” said Van Gaal

But there are ‘other’ senior figures in the team as well who can lead the side. Will ‘Roo’ be able to handle the pressure of leading such a big club or will he rattle under the pressure? Here’s our take as to why manager Louis Van Gaal has a made an error in appointing Rooney as captain:

1 – Whatever happened to Robin van Persie
Well, well! This comes as big news that former Dutch coach Van Gaal did not appoint his countryman Robin van Persie but rather than opted for Rooney. Who knows, if LVG would made a vice versa, things could take an upturn!

2 – Rooney crumbles under pressure
Everytime Wayne Rooney takes to the pitch, the fans and the players have huge hopes from the England forward. But, rather than putting it on the pitch; Rooney fails to give his 100 percent. It’s happened with the English national team and may so happen with Manchester United as well.

3 – Darren Flectcher was the ‘ideal’ choice
Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher has not been amongst the games for the club as far as the last season was concerned but this year, the former looks in shape and raring to go. Being the experienced person in the team, Van Gaal could have handed him the captaincy rather than doing the otherwise.

4 – Lack of goal threat from Wayne Rooney
By handing him the skipper’s armband, the responsibilities have gone sky high for Wayne Rooney this season. But, with added tasks, there’s a threat that ‘Roo’ might have a goal drought!

5 – Rooney is TOO GOOD to fill in the Skipper’s shoes!
In the hey days of Sir Alex Ferguson, the skippers were ‘characters’ and were often aggressive in approach with the likes of Roy Keane and Nemanja Vidic best remembered. Rooney on the other hand, is a calm and gentle persona.

All in all, Wayne Rooney is one of the best players in the English Premier League at the moment but this bonding of skipper and the club is not FITTING ENOUGH for the stature of Manchester United.
