Indian film producers have no dearth of fortune and they have no qualms in exhausting their money for the success of the films. Recently, actor Mohanlal has announced that he will star in the biggest motion picture ever produced in India which is being made at the budget of ₹1,000 crore (approximately $155 million). The film is the reel adaptation of “Mahabharata” which will be based on M.T Vasudevan Nair’s novel “randamoozham”. Mohanlal was approached to play the second Pandava prince Bhima in the film that is slated to be released in early 2020. Mughal-E-Azam(1960):

This period drama was made with an estimated ₹1.5 crores ($230,000) which was touted to be the highly expensive film of that period. It became a blockbuster hit and still continues to charm the hearts. It had spend 15 glorious years of the highest grossing Bollywood film before ‘Sholay’ stole its thunder in 1975. Mughal-E-Azam erned around ₹5.5 crores ($850,000) at the box office.

Puli (2015):

This Tamil fantasy-adventure film was made with a budget of ₹100 crores (approximately $15 million). It was, howbeit, didn’t make it to the blockbuster list in the box office. It has just managed to earn the production cost.

I (2015):

This one of the highest-grossing films of all time, ‘I’ was made around a budget of over ₹100 crores ( an estimated $15 million). The movie went on to become a massive hit and earned a whopping ₹225 crores (an estimated $34 million) worldwide.

Krrish 3( 2015):

This was the first ever superhero film made at a budget of ₹115 crores (an estimated $17.8 million) which later collected ₹290 crores (estimated $44 million) at the box office. The film was produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan and had Hrithik Roshan in the name role.

Dhoom 3 (2013):

This was the third instalment of the Dhoom trilogy and there are contradictory reports about the estimated cost of the film. Some say that it was made around a budget of ₹125 crores (an estimated $19 million) while others say that the producers channelled ₹175 crores (an estimated $27 million) to make this movie. Either way, the movie collected a whopping ₹585 crores (an estimated $90 million) worldwide. Goes without saying, it was an enormous hit in the box office.

Kochadaiiyan (2014):

The film was first to introduce the technology motion capture in India. This Tamil epic historical drama was made around a budget of ₹125 crores ( an estimated $19 million). It only soared into popularity in some rural locations of southern India. Apart from that, the film didn’t manage to do well and only collected ₹42 crores (an estimated $6.5 million) in the opening weekend.

These films were the most expensive films ever made in India. The list, however, comprises of other names like Enthiran (2010), Ra.One (2011), the blockbuster hits Baahubali: The Beginning (2015)  and Baahubali: The conclusion (2017).
