And rugby is consisdered to be a ‘serious’ sport.

The Commonwealth Games have left a great mark on the fans as far as the game is concerned but the above snaps potray a ‘different’ level of sport. CWG might have been potrayed as a serious event but the above leave a funny feeling altogether!

But here’s the big deal – the Indian hockey men have to face the Kiwis without their influential midfielder, Sardar Singh.

The skipper has been suspended for one match following his second dangerous offence in the tournament.

Sardar was reprimanded during the Australia game and was followed by a yellow card against South Africa. The authorities initially had handed him a two-match ban but after an appeal by the Indian contingent, the suspension was reduced to one.

So how will the Indian hockey team do without their midfield maestro in the semi-final clash against the Kiwis?

Coach Terry Walsh has taken a balanced team to the CWG that saw the Men in Blue win three out of their allotted four matches. Walsh’s side has a fair combination of experience and youngsters and no wonder; the results are there to see.

The likes of VR Raghunath, Rupinder Pal Singh add the vital experience to the side with the likes of Akashdeep Singh and Yuvraj Walmiki adding the youth side to it. Rewinding the clock back to the 1998 at Kuala Lumpur, Team India had tasted success over the Black Sticks but in 2006 Melbourne edition, New Zealand emerged victorious, beating India 2-1 in the 5-6 position playoff. India did not play the Kiwis in 2010 Delhi Games where the hosts settled for silver while the New Zealand took away the bronze medal.

New Zealand are current favourites going into this tie with former ranked number 6 in the world and New several players in the side have more international experience to their name. Their main man will be penalty corner specialist Andy Hayward, who will look to pile up more goals and misery for the Indian hockey team.

Clearly from the outset, Team India looks a bit shaky and deflated (without Sardar Singh). The steel and nerves of Sardar will be missed immensely in the midfield but some of the seniors have to step up the plate and take the team home. Its either make or break for the Hockey side who might not see the light at the end of the tunnel after all!

India might not be taking the numero uno position at the CWG 2014 but can definetly grab a spot amongst the top five after their first day heroics.

Weightlifters, Sukhen Dey and K Sanjita Chanu stole the limelight by grabbing a Gold each in weightlifting, as the Indian contingent launched their CWG campaign off to a winning start by clinching as many as seven medals in all on the opening day of the competitions at Glasgow.

Meanwhile, in judo, Indian participants Navjot Chana and Shushila Likmabam tried their level best but had to contend with a silver medal after they failed to clinch the top spot in the men’s 60kg and women’s 48kg events, respectively. Besides that, female Indian judoka Kalpana Thoudam had to settle for a bronze.

In weightlifting, there was a silver medal for S Mirabai Chanu too, grabbed a silver medal in the weightlifting category while in the men’s category, Ganaesh Mali bagged a bronze.

In the other events, Indian paddlers, shuttlers and squash players had an easy day out on the first day. In badminton, India crushed Ghana 5-0 even without the services of Saina Nehwal. Alot will depend on the young shoulders of PV Sindhu and P Kashyap, who will be vying for the gold medal at this year’s CWG.

K Chanu and Sukhen Dey were, by far, the heroes for India at the opening day of CWG 2014 in Glasgow, If Chanu’s gold medal grabbed the headlines in the women’s 48kg event, Dey made an all Indian affair in the men’s 56kg contest, where the 25-year-old Dey lifted a total of 248kg after trailing at the halfway stage.

In women’s 48kg weightlifting event, Sanjita won with a total lift of 173kg, whereas her teammate, Mirabai grabbed the silver thus making a 1-2 spot for India. The clinching of gold and silver medals for the Indian powerlifters thus capped off a remarkable day for the Indians at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow.

Even though the likes of England and Australia are likely to dominate the Commonwealth Games, the best India could do is fight for the third-fourth spot.

With still much more action awaited, the Indian contingent can could do their nation proud, not with medals but with the efforts!

What a blow! With her presence, India were confident of landing a gold medal but now that she has pulled out, hopes will be pinned on the likes of PV Sindhu, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa.

The Olympic bronze medallist, who is believed to be suffering from a knee injury as well, has taken the decision of withdrawing from the Glasgow Games in order to get fit for the rest of the season which includes important tournaments like the World Championship and the Asian Games. But will this be a bold move for Saina? Will it help her keep fit for the future events? How badly will India miss her at the Games?

Currently world number seven, Saina had defeated Wong Mew Choo of Malaysia in a thrilling final during the 2010 Commonwealth Games to bag a gold medal.

Without her, the Indian badminton contingent might fall flat. In the previous games at Delhi, India had won four medals. Besides Saina’s gold in women’s singles, the pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won the yellow metal in women’s doubles; Parupalli Kashyap earned a bronze in men’s singles, while the hosts settled for silver in the team event.

This time around, India does have a chance of grabbing a medal or too at the CWG but Saina’s absence might land a ‘killer blow’. Saina’s withdrawal is a big blow to India as the shuttlers were hoping to win at least five medals this time around, with P V Sindhu in women’s singles and K Srikanth in men’s singles also having bright chances of a podium finish.

“I know I am a favourite at Commonwealth Games. I am the defending champion but I still have to play and give my 100 percent to win the title. In sports, it is difficult.” the 24-year-old was quoted in a news report.

In all fairness, even though India will miss the services of Saina at the CWG; we pray that the 24-year old Hyderabadi gets well soon and starts hurling those shuttle cocks again!
