Sunanda Pushkar’s Death: Why Self-Righteous Twitteratis Are Wrong

The life of celebrities in social media world is as transparent as water. We become privy to the news they let us hear or see regardless of being personal or not. Twitteratis can be humourous, satirists, worst, they can be trolls, but no twitterati is a murderer.

Sunanda Pushkar’s death was the biggest shock that tweeples bore on Friday night. Some even went to the extent of saying that it was a death by twitter.

While one may agree that the twitter can be a tough place to be, but twitter cannot be a murderer.

Sunanda Pushkar took to twitter to expose the alleged affair that her husband Union Minister Shashi Tharoor and Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar. Not only she hacked into Tharoor’s account for the expose, she also appeared in the media accepting it.

There was no sign or stress on her part from the twitter attention that she was getting except for the fact that she was clearly not happy with the actions of her husband. She was up till late Friday morning answering to her followers and friends over the alleged affair.

She even told them that she was diagnosed with various diseases, including stomach TB, and that her days were numbered. Last that everybody knows, she was jovial about the whole incident and laughing it off on twitter.

To say that twitter was the reason behind her death is not only sad but also ridiculous on the part of people who have always spoken in favour of social media presence and freedom. It is just like giving your weak nerve in the hand of the people (read government) who want to rig it for their benefit.

The self-righteousness would have been appropriate at the time of making jokes on her and her marriage when she sought solidarity from her fans and followers.

She was an independent and vibrant soul which spoke her mind. She used twitter to her advantage, she did not let it kill herself. And by the way, it is not yet clear whether it was suicide or something else.
