Modern day students flying in from various cities make the easy, affordable and convenient PG or Dorm arrangements to live with other fellow students. And in such arrangements, they do look for comfort and good company, with the roommates.

And of course, comfort comes from a favourable living environment and clean surroundings.

Also, one of the various reasons clean and comfortable living situation is important because it helps to  maintain a less stressful and productive life, and the energies can be used in more important things, especially for students.

And that is why, being in a student life If one chooses to live with roommates, one must establish certain ground rules in order to ensure that each person is doing his fair share and respects each other’s rights.

Here is a comprehensive list of 5 college roommates rules that will help maintain peace and harmony amidst the room partners and co-existence will become a lot easier.

  1. Rules for Chores

This one the most important rule because this helps to maintain the peace and harmony to the utmost. If one roommate is doing all the cleaning and washing stuff and the other seems to be careless about it, trust me, the life will be no lesser than a hell. Make sure there is a clear understanding about the chore responsibility, divided as per the suitable days and time. Roommates need to take responsibility and respect the cleanliness needs of others. Establishing rules regarding housework will lead to a cleaner living situation and a feeling that everyone is doing their share.

  1. Rules for Noise

Loud music, late night partying and calling in the friends must be decided beforehand, and the days for such stuff must be laid down. Roommates also need to establish rules regarding noise levels throughout the day too, as some of them might be going through some crucial times such as examination, and may be looking for peace.  Roommates also need to respect each others’ rights for a peaceful sleep. Therefore, define the times when the loud things are allowed and when they are not.

  1. Rules for Food and Groceries

Usually there is an arrangement where two roommates happen to share the same fridge and kitchen. And just because they do that, that does not mean that they have all the right on the food bought and left by the other roommate. Roommates need to establish boundaries in terms of food and groceries. Regarding food, roommates can decide to separate everything or allow shared usage of essentials like milk, bread, tea, coffee and other dailies. One can also use stick-ons with name initials to keep the food fights at bay. Respect the food boundaries.

  1. Rules for Belongings

When one is in a student life, the money and resources are limited and hence one is quite careful about the belongings. Therefore, it is important that there are certain laid down rules related to each other’s clothes and other items, which can be borrowed or exchanged. It must be decided to borrow items such as DVDs, books, shoes, garments, etc., with permission and returning is always a must, without causing any damage to the stuff.

  1. Rules For Moving Out

There are times when life situations change and one needs to move out of the place for the reasons like, getting a job, or taking up another course, or maybe moving back with parents. For such situations also, the roommates need to establish an appropriate protocol.  A set amount of notice time must be given to the other, to ensure that they can find a suitable replacement and make ends meet for the following months, in terms of room rent and other shared expenses. For example, a month’s notice might be required from the roommate who is moving out to provide the remaining one with enough time to cover the loss. Roommates also need to decide among themselves, to spare each other a lot of clashes, as to who is responsible for finding the new roommate: the one moving out or the one who stays behind. If the one moving who is moving out is given the responsibility to bring a replacement, then the staying behind should be happy with his choice.

So here are the life saver regulations, which, if established, used and respected appropriately, can help the roommates to go a long way together.

The bonus will be the healthy bond that you will find in each other.
