5 socially awkward situations in life

That life is pretty much weird where you don’t know what is happening is understood. We all agree with that, yeah. But there are some really awkward situations in life, which you make you want to dig up a hole and disappear. Here are five we dread, what about you?

Pretending to text, when waiting for somebody:

How many times have you texted told free Vodafone number s or sent multiple ‘hi’ to your mother because you were bored waiting for your friend to show up? It’s so frustrating when you have nothing to do but don’t want to look utterly stupid so you start texting/pretending to text! With the availability of smartphones, we don’t look THAT foolish waiting. But imagine the days when you didn’t have a gadget in hand to act as a distraction. What did people do then? I am so going to ask dad about it.

Shouting a loud ‘hey’ to a stranger!

When you spot someone familiar and you go ‘hey!’ and they turn out to be total strangers? Yeah, that’s when you wish you could vanish and erase that incident out of your life…It happens all that time at malls, train platforms and cinema halls when you are super excited to meet a long lost friend, but end up looking utterly foolish. Ouch. The worst, however, is when you’re introducing your school buddy to your girlfriend and the former doesn’t remember you. Oh, kill me already!

Riding an elevator with someone:

I don’t know what the best opening line is or what topics to broach when I am riding the elevator with the neighbours/colleagues. There’s always this awkward silence punctuated by the ding-dong of the lift, with you willing for your floor to come up next. You can’t even fiddle with the phone as there’s never any network in closed spaces and you’d look even more stupid. It’s best to stare right ahead or count how many floors are there, even if you have lived there for over fifty years.

Not dressed for the occasion:

If you misread the dress code and landed up at a Hawaiian-themed party in formals with people giving you shocked stares, you’d know what we are talking about. It applies to those last minute plans where somehow everybody else is dressed appropriately for the situation, while you have turned up absolute rags. The overdressing/underdressing is also an important part of this. When you go to your friend’s wedding in loud clothes and make-up and everybody starts assuming you’re the bride. That…that’s the worst feeling ever. Or you are at a birthday party and are dressed like you were about to do laundry when others are in cool casuals. Damn it.

Bumping into someone you ignored:

So, they kept calling/texting/pinging you and you never bothered to reply because you want to get rid of them or what them they to leave you the hell alone. But imagine your face when you bump into them at a mall and go, ‘oh! You called? Really?’ and they go ‘uh-huh’. Or better still, you cut their call and shoot a text saying, ‘I am driving. Will call back’ and turn around…bam! They’re right in front of you.
