With new rape cases in Delhi, Kejriwal govt seeks control over Delhi police

The trauma of rapes in Delhi is not receding. We have barely come out of the brutal December 16, 2012 rape and the news of rapes in the city is on a rise. A 51-year-old Danish woman was raped yesterday near the New Delhi railway station.

With this the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has stressed the need for fast track courts, and for bringing Delhi Police under the purview of the state government.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will reportedly meet Lt governor Najeeb Jung and police commissioner of Delhi to review the rape incidents that have occurred in the last one year. He is also expected to request the chief justice of India to take all the rape cases to fast track courts, so that the strictest punishment is meted out to the culprits.

The biggest problem in this direction of less control over Delhi police which Kejriwal wants to gain. It was also one of his poll promises which he hasto fulfill. Bringing Delhi police under jurisdiction of the state government will increase the effficiency. Delhi Police are at present under the jurisdiction of the union government.

The party is also demanding a home minister at the state level so that in the event of such cases the matter is looked after by the home affairs of Delhi government. It otherwise becomes a long affair which includes contacting and consulting the centre.

The Danish woman, who came to India Jan 1, went to visit a museum Tuesday afternoon but lost her way to her hotel in Paharganj, a tourist hub in the heart of Delhi. Around 4 p.m. a group of men lured her to an isolated spot where she was robbed of her iPad and cash and then raped by six men, one of whom held a knife.
