Situation going from bad to worse: SC

“What is wrong with the system? Why are 90 percent of rape cases ending in acquittals? The situation is going from bad to worse. Why is it (rape) happening again and again? That too only in metropolitan cities?” remarked the apex court in the Indian judiciary. While listening to a case, filed by the father of a girl who was gang-raped in Haryana, the Supreme Court reiterated nation’s anger over the gang-rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai, last week. The family in Haryana alleged that victim’s mother was shot dead, after she filed a case against her attackers. The survivor has been receiving death threats since then, he added. The father’s appeal also stated that they are being blackballed in their village, since the day they reported the attack.

Judges then ordered all state governments to immediately frame a rehabilitation policy for rape survivors.

The photojournalist who was attacked in Mumbai last week, is recovering from her injuries in the hospital. Her family stressed on keeping her identity protected. “We live in a society where such actions will only make it more difficult for us to get back to normal life,” they said. Four of the accused will remain in police custody till August 30th. The fifth accused was arrested yesterday in Delhi and is also in police custody. The police said that their behaviour during the interrogation indicated that these men may have sexually assaulted other women in the past. Investigators also said that the gang ordering the woman to clean up the scene of the crime and taking photos to threaten her, act as an indicator that they were not first-time offenders.
