Teenage To Adult: How To Transition Seamlessly?

The most important transition of life happens when one is entering into adulthood from teenage.

And, there are so many things you can learn when you become an adult. There are lots of surprises in store! Trust me, If we learned anything from the films, like “Big” and “13 Going on 30”, it’s that adulthood isn’t always what it seems.

Many of you, except for a few Peter Pans, are desperate to get to adulthood, because no one in teens has a reality of what actual adulthood is like. It only seems like a life of full authority and “do what you want to do” stories. Yes, it is there, but a few reality checks are more than needed to help you travel through a carefree teen phase of life to mature adulthood, that too seamlessly.

Here, I bring to you a few pointers to make life a little easier when you are entering from teenage to adult!

Your Food Habits Will Need A Check

As a lifelong chocolate addict, I can tell you that all those things my dentist and mom said have come true. The cavities, the sugar crashes, the fillings that need replacements and the extra pound here and there all seemed so far off when I was a kid getting my sugar fix. How could something so sweet and fun be so bad for you? And don’t even get me started on soda and burgers and street foods! Acid reflux, tooth discoloration, pounds piling on. I could go on and on. Yes, there are many worse things you could put in your body, but as you start a journey in adulthood, you will have to keep a check to them and switch to healthy eating at least 4 days a week. Try that, you won’t regret it ever in life.

Your Company Will And Should See A Change

No doubt you are still young and must remain in young company. But remember when you were younger and you would tell your little older aunt about the music you listened to and she would look at you like you had five heads? As you get into adulthood and super busy with your career and own life, you realize that being in the similar company helps a lot. More times than you want to admit, you will yourself be acting like a monk in the lonesome journey of life. And hence, you would need people who can show you a path. Moreover, there are people like Miley Cyrus and Justin Beiber to do sufficiently outrageous things on a regular basis that they get national press coverage even you won’t miss. That suffices for stupid doses in life. In real life, try to keep the company that helps you retain your sensibilities and helps you understand the adult world a little better.

Making And Maintaining Friendships Will Be In A Different Light Altogether

Well, as soon as you start school and college, making friends is one of your most important projects. That’s usually the case throughout college life. But then when you hit adulthood, those friendships that were once so effortless and important for survival can start to fall by the wayside even in this world of constant connectivity. Work will make it harder to keep up with people who aren’t in the cubicle next to you, and when you start to have a family, it gets even trickier. Fortunately, in the transition period a few unusual things will happen when you start to value time alone; you learn to trust your own tastes and opinions as much as anyone else’s; and you learn that the company of one person who connects with you at various levels is so much more valuable than hours with a hoard of people who happen to be only pub hopping with you. You will have to see the friendships on different levels altogether. You will start identifying people as friends and acquaintances. And you better do that!

You Will Have To Start Figuring Out The Career Objectives of Life

When you are young, it seemed like grownups had it pretty figured out when it came to their careers. But in all reality, most adults are stuck with the careers they chose in a haste. However, when you become an adult, you realize that it is very rare that people know exactly what they want to do after college. Sometimes you toil away at a career just because “it works for now.” If you are lucky, you will find your calling, but that could be many years into adulthood. Making peace with that, while still working toward it is one of the toughest challenges you’ll encounter in your grown-up life. I advice, you seek some effective career counselling in the beginning of adult years and find your way through it. Many analytical and personality tests are available online, to help you choose a profession to the best of your liking, abilities and capabilities.

You May Feel A Little Tired And Weary As You Progress

Yes, you were tired as a kid and a teen, but none of that compares to adult tiredness. This is the kind of tired where sleep is so precious that you would probably give up a kidney for some sleep, and you will stop worrying too much about Friday and Saturday night outs. Learn to put health first and make best possible efforts to retain the quality of life than the quantity. Quality in terms of physical and mental health, which comes in shapes of food, fun and relaxation that you require and family that you need.

As You Become An Adult, You Will Understand Your Parents Better

When you become an adult, you realize your parents are just people too. They not only can’t control you anymore, but they also don’t have all the answers. They also (fortunately) aren’t the ridiculously annoying and embarrassing people you thought they were when you were a teenager. When you become an adult, you see them as they are, no more, no less. That’s both terrifying and really cool too. I suggest, focus on the cooler side and help them to be your friends, by becoming their friends. Trust me, your transition and life thereafter will fall in place all by itself.

You Must Learn To Manage Finances

Bills, EMIs, Taxes! All this stuff maybe is hard to learn, but it can feel like you are supposed to suddenly and magically be an expert on all the boring and annoying bills and paperwork that adulthood involves. Do yourself a favour and educate yourself about these matters beforehand. Get a financial advisor, get an accountant, ask your friend who is a lawyer. Be smart and take some classes if the need be. But prepare yourself so that you do not feel pulled down my mathematics as the life progresses.

Feeling Like An Adult Will Come Difficult

When people will call you “Ma’am,” you would turn around and look for someone else! Yes this happens. Even though many of us have legally been adults for years, we still don’t feel like it. Maybe we are like Jenna Rink in “13 Going on 30”, functioning on the idea that we are still our wide-eyed teen selves, just newly endowed with the ability to buy stuff on our own and go to a fancy job every day. Maybe you will always be in a bit of disbelief that we have made it to adulthood. Yet, the sensible stuff to do would be, TO GO WITH THE FLOW and smile every time you feel weird being a teen no more!

To sum it all, I would say that the most difficult thing about getting transformed into an adult form a teen is that you do not feel like an adult at all, for many many years. All your stupid insecurities and anxieties are still there, only you feel more stupid and insecure about being stupid and insecure because you’re not supposed be stupid and insecure anymore.

Well, that should make some sense to you, does it?

Basically, when you are stepping up, you are supposed to have answers.

And the answers may not always be easy to come by. That’s why just stop waiting for yourself to change and start to accept who you are, right away!
