Simple, generous and hardworking, Maharashtrians make for good friends.

They might come across as snooty at times, but they are genuinely nice folks who love to unwind with a cutting chai at the end of the day. We give you five kickass reasons to be friends with a Maharashtrian.

A buddy’s buddy:
A true Maharashtrian will stand by you, no matter what. Perhaps that’s why they are called a buddy’s buddy. You can blame their simple and soft nature for this behaviour (!). Even though they stay far away from fights and arguments, they will always have your back. Their dependability certainly gives them an edge over others.

Welcoming everybody:
They might be looked down upon for their ‘Me Marathi’ attitude, but that’s so not true. They love to interact with everybody and welcome other communities with open arms. That’s precisely why Mumbai, a predominantly Maharastrian city, is home to lakhs of people from various other communities. Don’t let political games sway you…Maharashtrians are really nice folks!

Yummy food!
From their yummilicious paani puris and chats to shrinkhand and aam ras to vada pav to pav bhaji , they have everything to whet your tummy. If you’ve a Maharashtrian friend, pester them till they bring you a plate of ghee-soaked puran polis! If nothing else, masala bhat will suffice. Agree, fellow Maharashtrians?

Rich literature:
Whether it’s the awesomeness of Shripad Narayan Pendse or the greatness of PL Deshpande, Marathi literature has something for everybody. And it’s definitely a reflection of their evolved culture and beautiful history. Even new-age Marathi-language writers are on top of their game and chances are, your Maharashtrian friend is a budding writer/director/artist himself. They are definitely super creative and humorous.

Ganesh Chaturthi:
No other city in the world celebrates a festival with this much passion, joy, devotion and madness. Ganesh, the lord of Mumbai, unites the city like no other. The ten-day festival lights up the entire city and the atmosphere is a crazed one. Maharashtrians are as colourful and cool as the lord himself and they will be seen making merry for ten days.
